Agios Ioannis (Mamma Mia)

Most people visiting this Chapel of Agios Ioannis are not especially religious but have seen the movie Mamma Mia and have been seduced by the Chapels’ spectacular setting. However, it is a bit of a climb up the rock as you have to ascend 199 steps and they get steeper as you approach the top.

There is a hand rail that starts about half way up so it is reasonably safe for most people. The pain of the climb is worth it as the views from the Chapel are breathtaking. Unless you are part of a tour you may well have the Chapel entirely to yourself as most tours arrive late morning and so can be avoided..

About The Location

Sporades islands lie on the northwestern part of the Aegean Sea.  The region is out of the main path of the ‘meltemi’ the north wind that prevails on the Aegean Sea in summer months, so things are much calmer than other places, such as the Cyclades islands. Winds blow usually up to 4-5 Beauforts, north – northwest direction.

Perfect for a day trip and can be combined with visits to other Skopelos Mamma Mia locations, such as Kastani Beach.

Since the Mamma Mia movie was released, the church of Agios Ioannis has become a very popular wedding venue for locals and tourists alike.
