Alonissos
The most peaceful island of Northern Sporades, Alonissos, may be considered by many as an island for couples only due to its magical and romantic sunsets, but the truth is it has something for all. Wonderful emerald beaches, picturesque villages, well-marked hiking trails for the fans of hiking and a local cuisine full of tasteful and traditional recipes made of unique local products, like the Alalunga tuna.
Last but not least, Alonissos has the first marine park established in Greece and the largest marine protected area in Europe, the National Marine Park.
About The Location
Sporades islands lie on the northwestern part of the Aegean Sea. The region is out of the main path of the ‘meltemi’ the north wind that prevails on the Aegean Sea in summer months, so things are much calmer than other places, such as the Cyclades islands. Winds blow usually up to 4-5 Beauforts, north – northwest direction.
Perfect for a day trip. Alonissos can also be explored in a two-day trip.
The beaches around the island consist of pebbles. The ecosystem in the north side of the island is in good condition. The Mediterranean monk seal is common around the island, and in 1992 the Alonnisos Marine Park was created to protect these seals and other animals.
